Hailed as “exacting and exciting musicians” by the Los Angeles Times, the three sisters of the Ahn Trio (Lucia on the piano, Angella on the violin, and Maria on the cello) have earned a distinguished reputation for embracing 21st-century classical music with their unique style and innovative collaborations. In 2011, President Obama invited the Ahn Trio to perform at the White House for a State Dinner honoring South Korea.
The Ahn Trio has also gained renown for its innovative arrangements of music from the rock canon. The group’s latest album, “Blue,” includes transcriptions of Prince’s iconic “Purple Rain,” Pat Metheny’s “Yuryung,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing,” and Antônio Carlos Jobim’s “Insensatez.” On previous albums, the group has recorded arrangements of songs by the Doors and Mark O’Connor. Cellist Maria Ahn previously released an entire album of David Bowie songs, “Je T’aime Bowie,” in 2014. Pat Metheny says, “Their willingness to play new music at such a high level is an inspiring and exciting quality that will continue to define the unique spot that they are carving for themselves in the music world.”
The Rogovoy Salon is a new, monthly series featuring musicians, writers, and artists hand-picked by Seth Rogovoy. Each event will be hosted by Rogovoy and include conversation and Q&A with the artists when appropriate.
